A Note from the Artist...
Hi, my name is Pandora Huff and I am a local portrait artist who lives on the Northside of Brisbane. My artwork ‘Butterfly,’ was created to give the viewer an opportunity to connect and embrace faith by creating a spiritual pathway through its imagery.
‘Butterfly,’ focuses on one of the four mission intentions of the Salvation Army listed as, ‘Creating Faith Pathways.’ I decided to depict this intention by exhibiting a butterfly woman praying in the darkness while she looks up towards a bright light. The bright light above her head is illustrating a higher power and her praying represents her devotion to her spiritual beliefs. This part of my artwork is expressing how turning to love and light can positively impact your life and assist you in your time of need.
The symbolic meaning of a butterfly in relation to Christianity belief is the resurrection of Christ. This concept idea of rebirth was used to explain my view of how faith can lead to a new perspective. Therefore, making the individual feel as though they have been reborn.
Although the painting’s main focus is on the intention of ‘Creating Faith Pathways,’ each of the four wings on the butterfly woman symbolizes each mission intention of the Salvation Army, they are, ‘Caring for People,’ ‘Creating Faith Pathways,’ ‘Building Healthy Communities,’ and ‘Working for Justice.’
Overall, I believe there is not just one way of connecting with the Higher Power and I hope that my
artwork will be able to help others form that connection to faith.
